Court seeks reports from Delhi University and Police, warns of strict action if electoral discipline is violated
New Delhi, September 17: The Delhi High Court has taken a serious view of alleged incidents of violence, vandalism and other disruptions reported during campaigning for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia directed Delhi University and the Delhi Police to submit detailed reports on the action taken in connection with the incidents.
The court made it clear that violence and damage to property cannot be permitted during the student election process. It also indicated that further action could be considered if the authorities fail to satisfy the court with their reports.
The court, however, did not put a stay on the DUSU elections scheduled for September 18. It observed that student organisations play an important role in developing democratic participation and stressed the need for maintaining discipline and peaceful campaigning.
The matter will be taken up again by the court on Friday after the authorities submit their reports.
