Big decision by the Delhi High Court in favor of Amritdhari Sikhs

Delhi High Court has given huge relief to Amritdhari Sikhs. The court ruled that kirpan-wearing Sikhs cannot be barred from attending high-security events. The court heard the decision while hearing the petition of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

In this regard, Delhi Committee President Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that the Delhi Committee had stopped a young man named Jaspreet Singh from carrying a kirpan during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2018 in the Delhi High Court. The case was filed.

The Delhi Police has filed an affidavit in the court admitting that it will not prevent the Sikhs from attending the high-security ceremonies and will respect the right to religious freedom found under Article 25 of the Constitution. The court has directed the police to follow up on the affidavit filed in the future.

Jagdip Singh Kahlon, legal counsel for Delhi Gurdwara Committee, said that writ petitions have been filed in the High Court in two other similar cases. One case is to prevent Sikh children from wearing kirpana in the ‘Net’ exam and the other in the DSSB test. He said that in these two cases the government has yet to file its response and the next hearing in both the cases is to be held on August 29.
